When last reported on (in my extensive review), the LS400 had made it to DFW, where I wrote about it. On Sunday morning, I drove it back down to Austin to spend some time with a few friends. No issues.

Cruised around Austin Sunday night and Monday, no issues.

Left Austin dark o’clock yesterday morning to get back to El Paso, and made it into town...no issues.

Stop by my workplace to grab a few things before heading home...car won’t start. It cranks, but it won’t fire. My first thought is fuel pump, as is the tow truck driver’s. At the time, he wasn’t going to be able to get the car to my mechanic before closing, but he would get it dropped off. So I left him to it, booked it to the shop in the Miata (which I retrieved from the airport), and explained to Mike what was going on with the car. With no other cars lined up before mine in the morning, mine would be the first one he’d tackle.

At 8:10 this morning, my phone rang.

“Shour? It’s Mike. We’re pretty sure it’s the timing belt. You know that this is an interference engine, right?”

“Yeah. How catastrophic are we talking?”

“It’s possible that you may not have tapped a valve. We’ll get started on it and let you know.”

I knew that the car was a gamble...just thankful that the Lord saw fit to get me back home first before the car quit.

That is the one fatal flaw of the 1UZ, 60k mile t-belt intervals. And being an interference engine.
